The Shine and Feel of a Marble Floor
Polished Concrete flooring offers residential clients a wide range of benefits. An array of decorative options allows the homeowner to combine beauty and practicality in creating a unique, customized floor.
Beyond the attractive characteristics of Polished Concrete, when you decide to polish your floors, you are selecting the most environmentally friendly flooring option available. Every other flooring option, whether it be tile, wood, or carpet, will eventually need to be replaced creating landfill impact. Along with glues, mastics, padding etc. used to install these type floors, the environmental impact is real. A Polished Concrete floor never has to be replaced and if you do decide to install another type of floor later on, the concrete remains, so GO GREEN with concrete!
Cleaning a Polished Concrete floor is as simple as damp mopping or using an auto-scrubber with a medium bristle brush. PH neutral detergents can also be used for a more through cleaning. Since no waxes or other chemicals are required, a Polished Concrete floor is simple and economical to keep clean.
A variety of sheen/gloss levels to choose from you select from a 400-grit European matte finish, an 800-grit satin finish, a 1500-grit gloss finish, or a 3000-grit high gloss finish. Each level higher increases the “shine” and results in greater light reflectivity. The per square foot price also increases about $0.50 for each additional level.
A wide variety of acid stains and dyes with twenty-two (22) assorted colors to choose from, concrete dyes provide a full spectrum of color options. Concrete dyes are translucent and allow the natural character of the concrete to “show through”. Degree of color vary some within the same area and every floor will be unique, with each individual floor absorbing more or less color. Acid based stains provide eight (8) additional color options, and ones that will create more of a variegated, etched look. Acid based stains are derived from the base metals and thus the limited color options.
While “colors” are the most exciting part of a Polished Concrete floor design, it can also be the most challenging. Since every concrete floor is unique in the concrete mix, the river sand, the amount of water used, and how it is installed/troweled, color absorption will vary some within a single room, and quite a bit from project to project. While it is a small expense, we always recommend that the homeowner allows CCFP to install a sample floor on your slab so that you can see YOUR floor before it is installed.
Customized score cutting allows custom patterns to be cut into your floor. Whether it be a “diamond” pattern or abstract/random patterns, score cutting can be used to create natural breaks and for having multiple colors to be incorporated into your design.
Minimal Maintenance a Polished Concrete floor provides a tightly compacted, mechanically refined surface, which helps to seal the floor. A stain guard will be applied to your floor at the end of the polishing process which will help to protect your floor. Most spills that are cleaned up and not left to soak the floor will not harm your Polished Concrete.
A safe and easy to clean floor a Polished Concrete floor typically exceeds OHSA standards for slip resistance (ASTM C 1028). The dynamic co-efficient of friction ranges from ~0.50 to 0.58 on a Polished Concrete floor and is less slippery as compared to unpolished concrete.
